Our Background

Hearts of Compassion Hospice is an NGO registered with the Department of Social Development Services. The NGO was established to provide on a non-profit, non-political and interdenominational a holistic community home based care through Palliative and supportive care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs associated with the final stages of illness, death and bereavement. The provision of quality palliative and supportive care consisting of a controlled Hospice program of total care...in accordance with the standards of care of the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa by professionals and trained volunteers is the mission of the Hospice.

Hearts of Compassion was established in response to the growing need of special care of persons living with chronic illness from rural areas. Most of the communities in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district live in poverty and therefore when they are sick, they do not have the means to provide or care for themselves. We believe that there is no end to caring and therefore HOC aims to provide a comprehensive approach to address the challenges that our communities are suffering from when it comes to health care especially the rural communities.

Hearts of Compassion aim to build comprehensive Hospices (IPUs) that will benefit not only HIV/AIDS victims but also address the care of all chronic illnesses. This will benefit all our surrounding communities and better the lives of individuals living with these ailments.

We further realized that some provinces like North West, Gauteng and Limpopo are predominantly agrarian and is also coupled with a lot of underutilized available tribal land and government initiatives to fund economic developmental projects have also been abandoned and in most cases, they fail due to a lack of skills. Further observation revealed that unemployment, the scourge of poverty, the lack of skills to run government funded projects and the escalation of crime is the main cause of the above.

Unemployment is therefore on the rise and this also added the motivation to emerge with the concept of palliative care. Subsequently, the aim is to provide holistic care for persons living with chronic illnesses and to improve the proper quality of life for people with life limiting diseases, orphans, vulnerable children and their families

The organization depends solely on funding from the government and donations from various donors for survival. It is imperative that Hearts of Compassion Hospice uses these funds responsibly and for the intended purpose, hence the organisation is accountable to all these funders. It is against this background, that this policy is founded.
